Welcome

Thank you for your interest in attending the Society for Caribbean Studies 32nd Annual Conference. The following notes should assist you in making arrangements for accommodation and attending the conference. Conference registration should be done separately via the online registration form on the Society website. Further details and maps have been added.

If you are presenting a paper at the conference or chairing a panel, please see the additional guidance notes on the Society website.

The 2008 conference will be held at the Institute of Geography, University of Edinburgh on Drummond, in the Old Town of Edinburgh from 12 noon Wednesday 2nd July to 3 pm Friday 4th July, 2008.

A conference pack will be given to you on arrival with full details of the conference’s events and local facilities. On arrival, please contact the Registration Desk in the main foyer of the Institute of Geography.

The evening meals and evening conference events will be held at the nearby main accommodation venue, Chancellor’s Court on Holyrood Park Road.

The Institute of Geography is located in High Schools Yards (marked as ‘5’ on the map: http://www.ed.ac.uk/maps/central-area/ [new window]), with main access from Drummond Street off Nicolson St in the Old Town.

The Institute is approximately 1 km south from Waverley Station and the terminus of the bus link to Edinburgh airport (http://www.flybybus.com/index.php [new window]). Metered street car parking is available in the vicinity, but no onsite parking is available. Parking facilities are available at the main accommodation venue, Chancellor’s Court, approximately 15 minutes walk due south from the Institute of Geography or 5 minutes by bus (numbers 2, 14, 30, 33, 48). Accommodation

The University has a range of en suite accommodation at Pollock Halls on Holyrood Park Road. The venue for the evening meals will be onsite at St Leonard’s Hall. St Leonard's Hall is the main building around which the accomodation halls are located in the same grounds.

The accommodation is approximately 20 minutes’ walk south from the day-time conference venue at the Institute of Geography, and is located on the edge of Holyrood Park and Arthur’s Seat.

Please book your accommodation as soon as possible, since room availability cannot be guaranteed for later bookings. There are single, double or twin rooms available with shared or private facilities. Prices start from £29 per night with breakfast.

    Visitor Information

    The main tourist office in Edinburgh is near Waverley Station on Princes Street (http://www.visitscotland.com [new window]). The staff at the reception of Chancellor’s Court will also have relevant information, and please feel free to ask anyone in the Main Office of the Institute of Geography for local advice.
