In spring 1974, a Caribbean conference was held at the Latin-American Centre, Liverpool University, convened by Colin Clarke. This brought more than 30 colleagues together. During 1975 and 1976, meetings were called by Professor David Lowenthal to discuss the development of Caribbean Studies in the United Kingdom. These led to the establishment of a Society for Caribbean Studies which held an inaugural meeting at the University of York, in 1976. This meeting was attended by some 70 persons coming from the Netherlands, Germany. Denmark and the United States of America, and officers for the first Committee of the Society were elected. At the Annual Conference in 1989, David Lowenthal and Richard Hart were made Honorary Members in recognition of their great services to the Society for Caribbean Studies.
In Lancaster in 2004, the Society paid tribute to Professor Colin Clarke by conferring honorary life membership for his contribution to Caribbean Studies
